Paardrijden in Iceland 2019
6 tot 8 dagen tochten
Between the Glaciers

The Arctic North
This part of Iceland is inhabited by only a few people, most of them living in little fishing villages along the coast. There is a lot of diversity on this tour starting with beautiful mountain views from the wide Öxarfjörður Fjord. The Peninsula of Melrakkaslétta, which stretches almost to the Arctic Circle, is a paradise for birdwatchers and people with geological interest. Here we are right on top of the Mid Atlantic Ridge where the North-American and Eurasian plates drift apart. From mid-June to mid-July this area is “home” to the Midnight Sun which sends its golden light over the deep fjords of North Iceland.
Hosts for this tour are Halldór and Elín with their family from Bjarnastaðir Farm, known to many Icelanders for their excellent breeding of horses. Halldór is a respected member of his community and among other things, he is a “mountain king” when the time calls for gathering up the sheep in autumn.

The Snæfellsjökull National Park is where you find one of the most recognised sights in Iceland; the glacier covered cone volcano Snæfellsjökull. Its mythical atmosphere became famous through Jules Verne’s novel “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. Today rich bird life attracts visitors from all over the world. The peninsula itself is often called “Iceland in a nutshell” because of its diversity of landscape. This tour leads through mighty lava fields, craters and ashes of ancient eruptions in Hítardalur valley. HORSEBACK RIDING IN AMAZING NATURE RESERVE
Thorsmörk nature reserve is the hikers paradise and you will get the chance to ride in this wonderland of nature.
We present here a truly wonderful tour into the fascinating Thorsmörk Nature Reserve. This tour used to be one of our most popular ones in earlier days and we are proud to be able to offer it again. The Thórsmörk area is hiker´s paradise. Riding in this wonderland of nature is pure joy.
On our way to Thorsmörk we are reminded of the major volcanic eruptions that occurred in 2010 causing massive disruption to international air traffic. We ride past one of the lava streams that flowed from the mighty glacier-capped volcano with the unpronounceable name, Eyjafjallajökull. We´re in the saddle for 4-7 hours (20-35 km) daily and stay in cozy mountain cabins with our horses nearby. On site, we have a sauna, an outdoor hot tub and warm showers. Can you imagine the sheer magic of relaxing in a natural hot tub in the highlands of Iceland with the Northern Lights dancing in the sky above? Life hardly gets any better!
